COVENT GARDEN, LONDON WC2
Re-design of a 1 bedroom flat in Covent Garden, London, designed by myself and executed by a Frost + Massive. The balcony storage system was inspired by work of the artist Piet Mondrian, the black lines and primary colours typically associated with Mondrian's work are evident in the finished design, echoing his bold yet minimal paintings and his eye for colour and form. The mosaic on the surfaces were created by using smashed black slate and white ceramic tiles, and were then fixed using black adhesive and grout, which is reminiscent of Mondrian’s palette. A cubist built in dinner table was designed and built to comfortably accommodate 4 people, whilst being able to fold away when not in use. The table serves as a great space saving function, whilst still remaining large enough for a drink or two when folded away. The storage seating houses household items which are able to be stored outside, such as tools, soil, shingle, plant pots, and various other gardening equipment. The lids on the built in storage system/boxes were painted white and strong fabric was used to make handles, so not to protrude above the surface where the seating cushion's made out of foam and blue waterproof fabric sit. Small square red, yellow and black cushions continue the theme. A heat lamp was installed to make the space functional during the colder months, and a fun element is present in the form of a disco ball with a blue LED spotlight. The interior of the flat is inspired by pop culture, fused with comfortable soft furnishings, mid century furniture and well designed high street pieces. The wooden floor in the entire flat is finished in hard wearing diamond varnish as the space also serves as art studio during the day, and the minimal white painted walls are covered in paintings, photographs, and posters from films and art events, which create a relaxed yet cultural element. Tin robots, mixed colourful cushion designs, an Eames Lounge and Ottoman, Mathmos lava lamps, and various other oddities complete the look. The overall design has personality, and fun elements yet doesn't compromise on clean lines. A sense of order is very much present due to the extensive bespoke storage system that was designed and installed - creating a place for everything, whilst remaining homely, despite the relatively simple white interior.
