THE ENGAGEMENT
Created for ACT ART 3, The Engagement is a performance featuring Marc Massive and I that looked at the act of an engagement, the ceremony of a civil partnership/marriage and the joining of two peoples hearts, minds and body. As with many of my performances my sisters Katy Frost and Hayley Frost also appeared in the work - acting as dressmakers/bridesmaids, piecing together a joint ball gown, made out of animal hearts, which Marc and I were encased in. The identity of gender is blurred in the performance, as we both stand in a single dress made out of steel and animal hearts. The exchange of bodily fluids took place as went through the motions of the ritualistic act. Making the dress out of animal hearts is symbolic of two people coming together whilst exorcising bad memories of previous broken relationships, pain, suffering, and the blood letting and drinking of each other’s blood took place instead of the ritualistic exchange of engagement rings, and confirmed our commitment to each other and spiritual unity, as apposed to a religious commitment.
Devised: Frost + Massive.
Featuring: Oliver Frost, Marc Massive, Vanda Playford, Katy Frost + Hayley Frost.
Photography: Stephanie Davis.
